This question depends on the definition of "university," which can differ from culture to culture, scholars to scholars. While the university at Salerno may the first university in stricly today's common definition, Al-Azhar University in Cairo, Egypt is also considered to be the oldest university in the world. It was founded about the same time as the city of Cairo, in 969 AD.
