I have a 9 yr old niece with what was known as Asperger's Syndrome, a form of autism. If your child is in school, or at least 3 yrs old, then contact your school district, they are obligated to address this concern with you. They may then do an autism evalauation, which would include a "school psychologist", a speech and language therapist, educational/achievement evaluations, and even consultation by an occupational therapist. If a diagnosis is confirmed, he will qualify for special educational services. Autism/Asperger's is not cured, but rather remedied and controlled. The child , depending on the severity of symptoms, the child will have increasing difficulty (with age) in relating to other children their age. They tend to be preoccupied with details and with routine. A change in the daily schedule is often a problem. Pragmatic language (the use of language in social situations) is usually delayed. The child tends to look at many things literally, they don't understand humor, and this is a problems that may only get worse with each year, and with his age peers, who will mostly develop these skills, and the autistic child will lag. So, they become less and less accepted and indulged by the kids who used to be their friends. There is so much that I could tell you, and the internet has a lot of sources which are good. but the one thing that will make life easier (for all concerned) is for you to educate yourself and your spouse as much as you can. This is now going to be the cause you rally for. Just like people with relatives (or who themselves) have some affliction, you are now an advocate for your son, and it will be the thing that may dominate your time and your passions for many many years to come. I believe the incidence of autism is about 1 in 150, so there are certainly other kids in your school with autism. I worked in public schools in special education and psychological services for many years and knew many autistic kids and their families. Find the local chapter for parents of autistic kids and call them. Good luck to you and your son, and your family.
