    Rip Van Winkle

It had to be the day that my mother got the telegram telling her that her husband had died. He was 36 years old. He was in the army, and had just been stationed in germany, (1961) We had all of our shots and passports ready to go over and join him.
I was 12 years old, and had to sign some papers for the army. I singed it Jerry B----. The officer looked at the paper and then looked at my mother and said; "He dosen't know?" My mother said "No" and took me into the bedroom and told me that the man I thought was my father, wasn't. That my name was Jerry O-----, NOT Jerry B----. That my real father had also been in the army, but, had been killed in a motorcycle accident before I was born, while my mother was still carrying me. When I was about 1 yearold she met and married Sargent B.
That was a hard blow to a 12 yearold boy that thought he had just lost his father, just to find out that he wasn't my father at all.
It took me many years of thinking about it to figure out that Sargent O was my FATHER. He was the one that raised me, that bought me my first bike, that kicked my ass when I did wrong, That loved me enought to raise me to be the man I am today.
