Question

Help answer this question below.

My fish tank goes green quicker than it used to. We got the two pretty good sized goldfish in the fall and the water didn't get really green until 2 1/2 weeks. Now we have to change the water every week if we want to see the fish. Whats happening?

It sounds like you are overfeeding. Cut back. If you are feeding goldfish pellets, make sure they are size appropriate for your fish to swallow whole and don't feed more than your fish can consume in 30 seconds. Otherwise, they will suck on the pellets, break them down, and then spit out the excess. The excess will fall to the gravel bed below and cause a bacterial bloom, which is different than a standard algae bloom due to excessive light or nitrates.

Someone suggested an automatic feeder. Unless you keep them very clean and dry, they can attract bugs such as roaches!!! They are good however in the short term if you are on vacation or willing to maintain them.

I wouldn't suggest snails either. Other than gold rams, they reproduce at a rapid rate and can clog your filtration.

I don't like live plants either. Their roots can get tangled in your undergravel filter (assuming you have one).
