Why are there so many single shoes on the side of the road or highway?

    I suspect that when shoes are lost in pairs, they get knocked around a lot on the side of the road: either when they fly out of the luggage they don't land together, or they get disturbed by cars, rain, etc.

    A semi-related story: once Gandhi was running to hop onto a moving train, and as he did so, he lost one of his sandles. The train was moving, so he couldn't go back for it. Thinking quickly, he pulled off the other sandle and threw it off the train. His travelling companion asked "why did you do that?", and he replied "so the man who finds the first sandal will have a pair!"
