I agree. Torture is what say. But there's always that drawback. What about the innocent guys who are executed? There's always that chance. But i agree in that the punishment should fit the crime.

Well, I agree with guitarman also, and as far as the innocents go,, we dont have a perfect system, no one does, but with DNA it is getting much better in that respect.

Thats also true.

I'm not sure I agree that prison is such a wonderful place to be. And if you execute an innocent person, how do you fix it when they are proven innocent? The only thing worse than one tragedy (the murder) is two (adding the death of the innocent accused) even if it only rarely happens. It's easy to say "So what, only maybe 1 out of 100 are actually innocent," but to that 1, I guarantee it matters. Also, the death penalty is disproportionately applied to poor people and minorities, further evidence that it is not fairly meted out considering that not only poor and minority people commit crimes. Mistakes are made. Killing people in an imperfect system will increase the severity of those mistakes. Put them in a cell with bread and water and forget it. If they prove they are innocent, that's an "oops" but at least it's not an "oh s**t we killed him." Life in a nasty, rapist-strewn prison may be worse anyway.

DNA doesn't correct the problems associated with false identification, false confession, etc. Plus, unless you are dealing with a rape where the perp ejaculated, there are few cases where DNA will be useful. DNA is not an end all be all to prevent the execution of the innocent.

EXACTLY!!! I couldn't agree too much more except for I am against the death penalty. If we actually used prisons for their intended purpose we would not need the death penalty because they would be miserable in prison. I am against the death penalty because people can change the prison system and make it less pleasurable for inmates. And if we execute an innocent person then what???? If the person is in prison they can at least try to save themselves. If people actually feared the punishment they would be less likely to commit the crime and crime levels would go down.

So you think Death is worse than Punishment? I have news for you. EVERYONE DIES And I mean everyone. So how is that Punishment? The problem with the deat penalty is Thousands of people have been killed when they were innocent, if one is murdered and they are innocent. Than that's one too many.
