What is Iowa like? I've heard it's all corn, but there must be more there than that.

No, it's not just corn - we grow soybeans too ! Actually, Iowa is one of the largest producers of hogs and cattle in the country (so if you are a fan of bacon and steaks, you can thank Iowa).

Iowa is generally flat - we might have areas of what you could call "gently rolling hills," but if you are from a hilly area of the US, you would probably not even notice our "hills." If you were to fly over it, you would see a great deal of green (all those corn and soybean fields). We do have a few "small cities," of roughly 100,000+ population, including two state universities that are quite good (one has an excellent engineering program, and the other a top-rated medical school).

On the whole, the crime rate is very low, housing costs are also very low, as well as home taxes. Most of the state is comprised of small and/or rural towns, with a fairly lengthy drive (average 90+ miles) to the nearest city - so it's a bit dull, but safe and quiet. The kind of place they tout as being "a great place to raise a family."

    • It is very pretty at sunrise and sunset, I see the sunrise regularly on my way into work.. I too live in a rural town and i take a 30 mile drive to work every morning, so i would say commuting is the worst part of living here, otherwise it is a beautiful place to live and raise a family..
