Unleaded gasoline, it won't harm the paint but it will take off the wax. Soak the area in the gasoline and keep it dampened with a rag until soft and removable. Wash the car with hair shampoo or car wash soap. Then rewax the area where the gasoline was applied.

    • Wash the car with hair shampoo? Not a good idea.

    • Why not?? Dish soap is harmful to the paint. My father owned a car wash and advised people to use hair shampoo instead of dish soap when they washed their cars at home.. it was in the newsletters from corporate. It does not damage the paint like dishsoap, and is friendly to the wax.

    • Never heard of that. Why would the owner of a car wash not advise customers to use a soap that is specifically designed to wash cars (ie. car soap)? I can see using it over dish soap, but that's like going from a horrible chemical to use to a bad chemical to use - an improvement, yes, but still not the best. It can be in all the newsletters in the world, but different kinds of hair shampoo contain different chemicals, and do not float away contaminants in the same way that vehicle soap does. That's not even factoring in the higher cost of shampoo over car soap.

    • Car wash soap is not available everywhere. Perhaps now days it is, but previously it was not available in all cities, and yes, sometimes the "cheap car soap" is worse than hair shampoo... I'm not talking your expensive dandruff, dry hair, rejuvenating oil, two-in-one shampoo. But if you are going to wash your car and town shopping isn't until Saturday, then use hair shampoo instead of dish soap!

    • Ic. So you're referring to many years ago when car soap wasn't in abundance. Now I can see it more clearly.
