I don't believe people treat animals like machines. Animals do have emotions, insticts (wild or domestic).
However, animals are just that, animals! They do not contain a soul. They are living in a "circle of life" and depending on where they are located on the "food chain" depends on what their purpose is here on earth.
They are needed for the scientific balance of earth and life as we know it.
Pets are a different subject. These animals are still, animals! They do provide us with companionship and love, but just because an animal is a dog or cat, doesn't mean they still do not deserve to be treated as fellow humans, they have no rights other than being fed and cared for, nor do they recieve benefits other than our love and respect.
Horses, cows, sheep, pigs, some dogs, etc.... all fall under the worker or food category.
The same can be said of any plant or forestry life, don't confuse plants and animals from people. Just as your car is not a pet.

    • They treat animals like goods and property. They don't contain a soul? So your god tells you it's okay to treat other beings this way?

    • Just because animals don't have souls doesnt mean that you can treat them with violence and abuse. Who brought your opinion that god allows us to treat anything non-soul with torture and physical abuse? I never said any of that... that must be an assumption of your faith or lack of.
But when it comes to experimenting for new drugs or cures for human disease, you would be appauled if a human died from an experiment, so animals are more desirable to use for experiments.
Remember the Holocost and the experimentation on humans then??
We learned alot from those experiments, but for what price?

    • I know of the holocaust, and I know that we are creating one with nonhuman animals RIGHT NOW. The way we treat them, as commodities for food and our general use? Who gives us the right to do this? If you want to quote the bible, it said humans were given dominion over animals, NOT tyranny. What we do right now is tyranny, and is no different than what Hitler did to the Jews, or whites to blacks and native americans, except perhaps it's worse in the sense that it has gone on longer because people don't want to be inconvenienced.

The suffering of a human to me is NOT worse than the suffering of a nonhuman animal. We have learned VERY little in our experimentation on nonhumans and certainly nothing that would justify the billions of lives that are destroyed each year. Not just destroyed, but vivisected and tortured, over and over and over again.

Who said animals don't have souls? I'm not religious, but I'd be curious to know the passage in your bible that says they don't have souls.

    • The very fact that we continue to consume and torture nonhumans shows that people with the 'animals are just animals' mind set are what's CAUSING this pain and suffering. What would your god think of you if he saw you advocating such pain?

HOW can anyone be advocating a kind and merciful god if they turn on their own common living beings and murder them for pleasure? You don't need to eat them - it's been proven time and time again humans can live happily without animal products - and you don't need to wear them. So WHY?

    • It has been proven that humans don't need animals for comsumption?? Did you know that without proteins from animals that vegetarians are malnutritioned without supplemental vitamins and proteins..and it is advised by the surgeon general for NO ONE under 18 to live a vegetarian lifestyle without these added supplements.

    • Where do you get your information? Vegetarians are NOT malnutritioned. Supplements that vegetarians take ONLY take those because we cannot eat veggies directly from the ground like we could way back - which is where we could have gotten our B12. B12 is the only major concern for vegetarians. Just because it is easier to get B12 from an animal, that doesn't mean it's the ONLY way.

The FDA has APPROVED a VEGAN lifestyle for human beings in ALL stages of life, including children and pregnant women. The food pyramid was completely redone and veganism IS part of that pyramid.

You DON'T need animals for consumption anymore, and thinking you do is just archaic and deluded. This is not the medieval age, where food was scarce and you have to kill others to survive. Everything is available to us, and we CAN live happily and healthily WITHOUT taking other lives.
