    An Educated Optimist

I am a Christian, and it isn't because I'm ignorant or because my parents were. I'm not ignorant -- I'm reasonably intelligent. Also, my family was not Christian growing up. I'm Christian because after doing a great deal of reading, soul-searching, and prayer, I was convinced that not only is God real, but that Jesus is His Son. Since then, I have formed a relationship with Christ, and I'm more and more convinced every day. I can't speak for other people, or tell what other people think. What I can say is that through a number of trials in my life, Christ has been a constant comfort and guide for my decisions.

    • What country did you grow up in?
What religion are most of the people you know?

You say your parents were not Christian- I believe you are using a narrow definition of Christian. I bet your parents were Christian, just not devout- "secular christians" or "nominal christians".

You follow the same faith as your parents, the same faith you were raised in, you just do it with more intensity.

If you had been born in India, you would be a Hindu right now.
If you were born in Nepal or Tibet, you would be a Buddhist.
If you were born in the Middle East, you would be Muslim.
You are Christian for the same reason why you speak English, wear the style of clothing you wear, and eat the kind of foods you eat- they are just products of your culture.
It's just a simple random chance of geography.

    • Magenta, I notice that you are putting forth a great deal of effort towards refuting other peoples' beliefs. I would never presume to explain to you why you believe one thing or another. As you do not know me, my situation, or my family, it is ludicrous for you to tell me why I am a Christian. What you believe is your business, and this crusade of yours to tell Christians that they are sheep following a trend makes me wonder what is going on your life that you need to put down the faith of people around you. Perhaps you should give thinking people some credit, or at least the respect of not mocking their faith.

    • So, you come to a question and answer website, and refuse to answer a question- and then even get on your high horse and pass judgement on someone for even asking the question in the first place.

It did not take a great deal of effort to ask the question.
Obviously, it would take more effort than you can muster to answer it.

That in and of itself answers the question.

You made the decision to answer a question about how you arrived at your faith, and now you clam up. Gee, I wonder why.

If you don't want to discuss your faith, fine- then you are in the wrong place.

I give thinking people a lot of credit- thinking people are not afraid of introspection like you seem to be.
