In my experience, freshwater angel fish have been pretty good with other types of community fish. Saltwater angel fish are pretty aggressive, but the freshwaters do well with other angels, as well as fish like:

Pictus catfish (although they're pretty spastic and can stress out the other fish by chasing them around, so if you do get these, I'd reccomend getting them very small)

    Bala sharks (cool fish)

We had clown loaches with our community fish that did well (although I would imagine any type of loach would be fine, there are lots of varieties)

    Cory catfish

    Columbian sharks

    Mollies/platys

Barbs-tiger barbs are pretty, and rosy barbs are nice too.

I wouldn't reccomend anything aggressive--no cichlids, no gouramies, no knife fish (if for no other reason than they're pretty finicky and need extra spaces to hide in your tank, but also they've been aggressive in my experience), and no pacus or oscars.

Also how big is your tank? If it's fairly small (under 15-20 gallons), don't keep more than 5-6 fish; if you get too many in too small a space, they'll eventually kill each other...

Good luck! And have fun, fish have proven to be a really fun hobby for my husband and I, I hope you can enjoy them just as much :)
