String instruments are in 3 classes. Plucked, bowed and hammered. A hammer dulcimer is a stringed instrument that is played by striking the strings with hammers. Regardless of the use of hammers, it does not change the fact that there are STRINGS on the piano that are producing the sound therefore it is a string instrument. If a piano had no strings it would produce no tones.
