"Nothing in the Koran specifically states that the faithful are allotted 72 virgins apiece. For this elaboration we turn to the hadith, traditional sayings traced with varying degrees of credibility to Muhammad. Hadith number 2,562 in the collection known as the Sunan al-Tirmidhi says, "The least [reward] for the people of Heaven is 80,000 servants and 72 wives, over which stands a dome of pearls, aquamarine and ruby.""

    • Hmmm...one wonders what the least for a woman is. Never mind, I guess we know. Someone has to be one of the 72 accursed to be subject to a man in the afterlife, as well as the present one. *sigh*

    • The Torah, Bible & Qu'ran say hat women are at least a third the value of men! There are many quotations thet say so.

    • Everyone but Muslims seem to know about the "72 virgins". Could you give a reference please?

    • Thebyann, I don't have a reference in the Koran, which is why I was asking this question. The 72 virgins for a martyr is one of the recruiting points for extremists. Apparently they get it from the Hadiths, as Farino states. Check out the answer here by Islam101, and maybe you can clarify for me? I really would appreciate it. http://www.topix.com/forum/world/denmark/TM0E8E0TVSCU08KMC/p2

    • Sorry, AR. Wasn't thinking. Couldn't find anything on site you posted. My husband just got back from Hajj. He bought me a huge book of the hadiths. I will look in there and let you know what I find. Just put another comment on here to remind me. Salaam

    • Thanks! :) The answer on the link that I wanted you to notice says, "Two points need to be noted. First, there is no mention anywhere in the Koran of the actual number of virgins in paradise.
Materialism and sexual implications of such descriptions are forbidden and this is a 'Mistranslation' that 'virgins' should be replaced by 'angels'. In sura 55 verses 72-74, Dawood translates the Arabic word 'hur' as 'virgins', and the context makes clear that virgin is the appropriate translation: 'Dark-eyed virgins sheltered in their tents (which of your Lord's blessings would you deny?) whom neither man nor jinnee will have touched before.' The word hur occurs four times in the Koran and is usually translated as a 'maiden with dark eyes'. What is said of as '72 virgins' is INSULTING on behalf of Islam, Muslims, and all mighty and merciful ALLAH=GOD. Yes GOD, Allah means in Arabic GOD.
Islam is a peaceful religion that All Mighty Great Merciful Allah has chosen mankind for, Islam is not here to bomb anything kill anyone or even the smallest creature the ant any harm.
Islam is about Peace, helping people/others, and to please Allah in his eyes and be a righteous man/or woman while you are in this world."
